1. BRAHMS: Scherzo for horn and piano – Listen on YouTube

This work, with it’s horn-like hunting motif, make an excellent addition to the horn literature. Originally for violin and piano, this scherzo was a birthday gift from the young Brahms to the violinist Joseph Joachim.

*2. BRAHMS: Serenade No. 1 – Listen on YouTube

Arrangement for 11 instruments: 2 vn, va, vc, bass, fl, 2 cl, fg, 2 hn

Originally written as a nonet, Brahms was encouraged by Clara Schumann to rewrite the piece for full orchestra.  While various attempts have been made to reconstruct the missing nonet edition, the LCP edition adds a second violin to balance the winds and a second horn to play third horn solos and reinforce some of the bassoon lines.

*3. ARDELL HAKE: “Spanish Festival” – Listen on YouTube

2 vn, va, vc, bass, fl, ob, 2 cl, fg, 2 hn, tp

This piece was written for the Lyons Chamber Players by “The Simpsons” composer/orchestrator Dell Hake. It has the same instrumentation as the chamber version of Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll”.  It is a great piece for youth concerts and encores.

*4. LENNIE MOORE: “Awaken”, a Concerto for Electronic Valve Instrument (E.V.I.) & Strings – Listen on YouTube

The E.V.I. is a wind synthesizer with an 8 octave range, all of which is used in this work.  This modern but accessible work can also be performed with an Electronic Wind Instrument (E.W.I.)
